A busy month ahead

First Sunday of May is traditionally known in Tonga as the 'Sapate Faka-Me', which is a day to focus on children. Most of the mainline churches give children this particular Sunday to perform many dramas, plays, skit or action songs through various church activities.Faka-me

Children, through Sunday School, spend weeks preparing for the Faka-Me. They have to memorise Bible verses, hymns, lines for their various parts in plays and dramas. A time where children get to wear nice and new clothes, and are prepared delicious food.

Follow the Sapate Faka-Me on the second Sunday of May is the Tongan Mothers Day. All the Mums are being celebrated and it can be a very sentimental day. I have realised recently that some people wear a red rose if you have lost your mother, and a white one if your mum is still alive.

The third Sunday is the Tongan Fathers Day. Perhaps, not as emotional as the Mothers Day nonetheless, an important day in Tonga.

As we approach a rather busy month in the church calendar, check out Talanoa, for features, stories and commentaries.
