About us

We are…

A group of young people stumbling on life’s curvy path - yearning to follow Jesus. We believe in the Scriptures, the inspired Word of God. We are all in some way Tongan.

We are young men and women from different professions. We have different skills and experiences and hope to positively impact the most needy areas of Tongan communities.

We wish to use our various skills to bring social transformation and encourage sustainable development. We invite you to help us make a difference.

iTonga is also an open space for diverse and healthy conversation about the challenges and joys our communities experience.

Welcome to itonga

Tevita and heta

My wife and I and our little family have lived in the UK for sometime and are soon moving to Paris. We live in Europe and love our life but also love Tonga - which is so far away.
We have tried over the years to support work in Tonga that positively impacts Tongan youth but have struggled to make our short-term efforts contribute to long-term needs. Last summer we stumbled across the Kolovai Free Wesleyan Primary School and were grateful to have resources and time available to committ to its urgent needs.

Our time there was inspiring and fulfilling. It challenged us to consider ways we could continue to support local schools and turn it into something sustainable- and encourage our friends and family with the same passion to join us. The idea of a website was born out of a desire to formalize the little work we did. To help it grow and make a bigger impact in Tonga and in our hearts.

This website is an effort to encourage us to hold to the strength of what binds us to each other. There are breaks and tears in our communities, our churches, our personal relationships and even our homes. Events like the 16th November, 2006 in Tonga leave us with more questions than answers. All too often we throw our hands up in the air apathetically and pretend there is nothing we can do. We tell each other how disgusted and ashamed we feel but our ire rarely translates to anything constructive. The best way to combat our sense of hopelessness and apathy is to focus our hearts and energy on the things we can do something about.

We have committed ourselves to supporting local Tongan needs that have little access to resources because it inspires us to hang on to the backbone of our Faith and inspires others to hang on to us. In simple words, a large part of this web space is dedicated to putting together and particularly on the web, 'projects' that we are able to co-ordinate and work alongside in Tonga, (see Projects section).

This is obviously a work in progress. Our hope is for this space to be a starting point for ideas that will inspire growth - that will encourage us to reflect on our own lives and how we can use them to affirm and encourage each other. I invite you to take a few minutes and look around!

Tevita Vaikona

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
